The direct answerTo form a Wisconsin domestic LLC, choose an available name, arrange a registered agent and office, and file articles of organization with DFI. Then address tax accounts, business operations and ongoing filings separately.

Current fees, with dates

Checked October 30, 2026: DFI lists domestic LLC formation at $130 online or $170 on paper, and annual reports at $25 online or $40 on paper. These exclude expedited processing, professional services and other registrations. No unpublished 2027 fee change is assumed.

The filing sequence

  1. Check the name through DFI; a preliminary search is not final approval.
  2. Choose a qualified Wisconsin registered agent and registered office. Keep contact information current.
  3. Prepare and submit articles using the official DFI or One Stop route. Review all entries before paying.
  4. Save the accepted filing and organize ownership/operating records with appropriate advice.
  5. Obtain an EIN from the IRS when needed; the IRS application is free. Form the entity first.
  6. Check Wisconsin DOR tax accounts and local or professional permits for the actual activity.
  7. Set up banking, bookkeeping, insurance and a calendar for annual reports.

What an LLC filing does not do

It does not issue every operating permit, approve your zoning, insure the business, guarantee funding or automatically reduce taxes. An LLC can still have personal guarantees and other liability exceptions. Keep personal and business finances and records appropriately separated.

Do you need Wisconsin business tax registration?

Use DOR’s applicability checklist rather than assuming every entity needs the same accounts. DOR lists a $20 initial business tax registration fee and $10 renewal fee for applicable registration. Confirm current requirements and renewal timing directly with DOR.

Federal tax classification depends on the LLC’s ownership and elections. Have a qualified tax professional explain the relevant returns, estimated payments and payroll obligations before choosing an election.

Create a compliance calendar

Record your accepted filing date, applicable annual-report deadline, registered-agent details, tax filing dates and insurance renewals. Use DFI’s official annual-report instructions for your entity rather than a commercial reminder that looks like a government invoice.
