Choose a manageable first service
Snow removal is a separate service with different equipment, scheduling and liability. Do not assume winter work will automatically replace summer income.
Two startup budget scenarios
The budgets below are original planning examples prepared October 30, 2026, not vendor quotes or statewide averages. They assume one owner, an existing phone, suitable computer or transport where specified, no employees, no leased premises and no owner living expenses. Confirm local rules, tax treatment and insurance before accepting work. If required costs exceed your allowance, raise the budget or narrow the service; do not skip them.
These are lean and more-equipped planning scenarios. Insurance and compliance costs require quotes; neither column includes a vehicle purchase, owner wages, employees or rented premises.
| Item | Lean allowance | More-equipped allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Mower, trimmer and blower allowance | $900 | $2500 |
| PPE and hand tools | $150 | $300 |
| Online LLC formation, if chosen | $130 | $130 |
| Initial insurance allowance | $300 | $600 |
| Outreach | $75 | $200 |
| Maintenance and working reserve | $500 | $1500 |
| Illustrative total | $2055 | $5230 |
Wisconsin checks before accepting work
Wisconsin DATCP regulates pesticide application businesses and applicators. Mowing is not permission to apply herbicides or other pesticides. Check the relevant certification and licensing before offering chemical services, including products marketed as organic.
A repeatable job process
- Start in one neighborhood to reduce unbillable driving.
- Inspect slopes, obstacles, debris and access before quoting.
- State whether trimming, edging and clipping removal are included.
- Write a rain-delay and overgrown-grass policy.
- Reserve cash for blade service, repairs and the winter gap.
Price the whole job
Estimate route time, not just cutting time: three 30-minute lawns with 15 minutes between stops require at least two hours before loading and administration. Group nearby customers before expanding your service area.
Find the first customers without a large ad budget
Build a small portfolio from work you are authorized to show. Describe exactly what the customer receives, where you work and how to request an estimate. Ask satisfied customers for honest feedback without incentives tied to positive reviews.
Approach complementary businesses with a specific referral fit. Track who contacted you, the service requested, whether you quoted, and whether payment was received. A website inquiry is not a sale.
