Roofing customer-acquisition cost calculator
Include relevant website and marketing costs consistently. Count actual customers, not projected jobs. The examples do not describe Angi, Thumbtack or any real campaign.
Cost per acquired customer
$200.00- Total cash plus time cost
- $400.00
- Cost per inquiry
- $20.00
- Cost per qualified opportunity
- $40.00
- Qualified-to-customer rate
- 20%
Total cost = cash + hours × time value. Each unit cost divides that total by its actual count. With a zero count the unit cost is not defined. This does not calculate job profitability, lifetime value or collected revenue.
Choose channels you can maintain
Angi and Thumbtack are independent platforms, and their offers and terms can change. This guide does not claim they are always expensive or ineffective. If you want less dependence on purchased inquiries, build a few direct channels and compare your own costs and outcomes.
Start with a reliable website contact path, an eligible Google Business Profile and a referral process after completed work. Add neighborhood outreach only where permitted and relevant. Never manufacture storm damage claims or pressure a homeowner into an immediate decision.
Get the local basics right
Use accurate business details, hours, service categories and a legitimate service-area setup. Follow Google’s eligibility rules; do not create a fake office to target another city. Google describes relevance, distance and prominence as local ranking factors and offers no paid route to a better organic local position.
Give homeowners evidence before the form
Create useful pages for the services you actually perform: inspection, repair or replacement as appropriate. Explain your process, coverage, credentials and the information needed to request an estimate. Use authorized project images with honest context; do not invent customer results or reviews.
Location pages should answer real local questions and describe true coverage rather than repeat the same page with a city name swapped. Avoid implying that a website proves insurance coverage or credentials; provide a way for customers to verify them.
Make referrals and reviews routine
After an appropriate completed job, ask customers for honest feedback and make the review link easy to find. Avoid rewards tied to positive reviews. Ask permission before using a project in your portfolio. Develop relationships with complementary trades and property managers while respecting their referral and disclosure rules.
A concise follow-up can confirm whether an estimate was received and offer to answer scope questions. Use the customer’s permitted contact channel, honor opt-outs and avoid automated outreach without the required consent.
Measure the whole acquisition cost
Original example: $300 outreach spending plus four hours valued at $25 = $400 acquisition effort. If it produces 20 inquiries, 10 qualified opportunities and two new customers, that is $20 per inquiry, $40 per qualified opportunity and $200 per customer. These are hypothetical numbers, not market benchmarks or expected results.
Use the same time period and customer group in numerator and denominator. If there are no customers, cost per customer is undefined, not zero. Revenue from a signed project is not collected cash or profit; evaluate delivery margin and payment separately.
Define a qualified opportunity
| Stage | Your definition | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| Inquiry | A real request received | A page view or spam form |
| Qualified opportunity | Fits service, location and reasonable next step | Every unanswered call |
| Estimate | Scope and price supplied | An accepted job |
| Customer | Agreed work under your sales definition | A form submission |
| Collected sale | Payment actually received | Quoted or projected revenue |
